Autism and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) refer to a brain developmental disorder or a group of complex disorders of brain development. The autism spectrum or autistic spectrum includes autism, autistic disorder, Asperger syndrome, Rett syndrome, childhood disintegrative disorder and pervasive developmental disorder-not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS).

People with Asperger syndrome, also referred to as aspergers and Asperger's Disorder, are sometimes called people with "high-functioning autism". So people with aspergers generally have a milder form of Autism.

Autism or ASD appears during the first few years of a child's life and it affects the brain's normal development of social and communication skills. An autistic child may be withdrawn, have difficulty in developing friendships or may not respond to eye contact or smiles. Also a child with Autism or autism spectrum disorder may develop language slowly if at all.

Just as there is no one type of Autism most scientists believe there is no one cause of Autism. Scientists have identified some genetic mutations that can cause a predisposition to Autism but there are also a number of non-genetic and environmental factors that affect whether or not a child becomes autistic. Today most scientists believe that Autism is a physical condition related to abnormal biology and chemistry in the brain and the exact causes of these abnormalities are not known.
